Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions ended a 55-year wait to beat Germany in a tournament knockout match thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane in front of an adoring crowd at Wembley as they booked their place in the quarter-finals.

The goals, and the full-time whistle, were greeted with jubilant scenes from supporters and the party went on well into the night even though the big game was played on a school night.

It came in front of 41,973 raucous fans at Wembley, as life returned to something like normal in the biggest attendance for a football match in this country since the coronavirus pandemic struck 15 months ago.
