A flower stall owner was reportedly stabbed to death in broad daylight as he tried to stop a mugging in north London.

Police were called at 5:27pm on Saturday to reports of an injured man on Essex Road in Islington, the Met Police has confirmed.

Officers found a man suffering from a stab wound and immediately provided first aid, the Mirror reports.

Despite their efforts, and that of the London Ambulance Service, the man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5.58pm.

Social media reports indicated the victim may have been a local man who runs a florist in the area.

There have been no arrests in the case

Next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will be held in due course. Formal identification awaits.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have been informed.

A crime scene remains in place in the area, where crowds have gathered in the wake of the tragic incident.

At this early stage, there have been no arrests.
