Google Maps users have been left baffled after one spotted multiple tanks in the middle of the desert.

The image also shows what appears to be a lake, leaving one user questioning what it was.

The area is believed to be called China Lake in Kern County, California. The area is supposedly a naval air weapons base used for the testing armed forces equipment.

Reddit user stillnotme27 posted two photos from Google Maps where multiple people got involved in the conversation.

But one user, lumberjacklancelot, was quick to clear up what the tanks were doing there.

“Decommissioned tanks the military set up for target practice,” they wrote.

“The “pin” shape is a manmade lake probably to float boats for target practice. It’s a hole in the ground with a boat ramp basically.”

Another user was able to clarify where the base was, arbitraria79 said: “The terrain immediately made me think of China Lake, but didn’t think it actually would be (spent more hours than I can count staring at aerial photography of various sites on base in my civil engineering design days, worked on a couple of projects for [Naval Air Weapons Stations], one of which stretched out over several years).

“They do all kinds of crazy weapons testing out there, the architectural/engineering end for facilities is rather fascinating.”

The coordinates for the drop pin that has uncovered this mysterious base are 35.8896303, -117.6705537.

The pin shaped area also threw up a few questions. It is believed to be a lake, but made some users ask why it appeared to be so dark.

Reddit user lumberjacklancelot was quick to propose a theory,

“It looks like it’s lined with black plastic or something to prevent the water just draining into the dry soils,” they wrote.

“But yeah it could just be a big bomb hole they filled.”
