A small comment about Prince Harry’s royal titles after his recent podcast appearance has left royal experts baffled.
The Duke of Sussex has regularly spoken out about the struggles he faced within the Royal Family and how much happier he is now after moving to the US and stepping back as a senior royal.
One of his appearances in which he revealed the challenges he faced growing up within the monarchy came on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
After Harry left the pod, Dax and co-presenter Monica revealed the conversation they had with his publicist about how to refer to him.
Monica said: “(The publicist) asked if we wanted to be called Dax and Monica and I said ‘yeah, how should we refer to him? It probably won’t come up as we will just be in person it will just be ‘you”.
“She said ‘I always say Prince Harry or Duke of Sussex and he will tell you immediately just to call him Harry, but I let him do that’.”
The comment was picked by Molly Mulshine and Christina Garibaldi on Us Weekly’s Royally Us podcast.
“At the very end of the interview, after Harry leaves, Dax and his co-host talk about what went into preparing the interview and they had this great titbit that no one really picked up on about his title,” Molly said.
She suggested the “let him do that” comment implied you “still have to call him Prince Harry until he grants us permission not to”.
“I don’t know I found that so confusing,” Molly continued.
Christina agreed, adding: “Do you not want to be a royal? One foot in, one foot out, that’s what it seems like.”
“Maybe it is hard for him to separate the two, I mean he has been in this life for so long and that is what he has always been referred to, maybe those are just the rules he goes by – maybe he didn’t even know the publicist said that.”
Harry spoke out on the podcast about how much he disliked growing up in the Royal Family.
“It’s a mixture between The Truman Show and being in a zoo,” Harry said.
He added that since moving to California he has felt a lot freer and can bring up his son how he wanted to.
“So living here now I can actually lift my head and I feel different, my shoulders have dropped, so have hers, you can walk around feeling a little bit more free,” he said.
“I can take Archie on the back of my bicycle, I would never have had the chance to do that.”
