How Captain Sir Tom Moore’s final bucket list wish was granted weeks before death

Captain Sir Tom Moore’s final bucket list wish was granted just weeks before his death when he flew to Barbados with his beloved family.

The 100-year-old war veteran died on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 surrounded by his family and grandchildren.

He fell sick with pneumonia, and was later diagnosed with Covid, less than a month after he returned from the once in a lifetime trip to Barbados.

In an Instagram post at the time, Captain Sir Tom was pictured sitting on a British Airways flight smiling alongside a caption that spoke of ticking something off of his bucket list.

The much-loved public figure, who raised over £33 million for the NHS, said he didn’t think “he’d ever get to travel again”.

Captain Sir Tom’s wish was granted on December 11 when he flew to the Caribbean island of Barbados with his daughter Hannah, her husband, and their children.

Thanking BA and Visit Barbados, a message from Tom said: “I never thought that, at the age of 100, I would get to travel again. I’m so grateful to everyone who has made this possible.

“The support I have been shown in 2020 has given me renewed energy and today I get to tick something off my bucket list.”

The family posted two snaps of the bucket list trip to the page, one of Tom on the plane, and another warm group picture.

In the snap, the family can be smiling as Tom sits in his wheelchair with the Barbados sun in the background.

Captain Sir Tom’s Insta page wrote that the family was “enjoying a beautiful family day” and hash-tagged it with the war veteran’s iconic Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day phrase.

Sadly, his daughters Hannah and Lisa announced the death of their father just days after he had been admitted to Bedford hospital with difficulty breathing.

The family said the last year of his life had been something he could have only dreamed of and insisted that he will stay in their hearts forever.

British Airways were quick to send a tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore, calling him a “true British hero” who as an “inspiration to people all over the world”.

In a statement, the airline said: “We are incredibly sad to hear of the passing of Captain Sir Tom Moore, who was a true British hero and an inspiration to people all over the world.

“As we fly, we will remember him and be forever grateful for his positivity, which gave us all the wind we needed beneath our wings through difficult times.

“Our love to his wonderful family from ours xx”
