Meghan Markle is determined to keep her Duchess of Sussex title – despite quitting royal duties last year, a source has claimed.
The former actress is said to fear a “PR disaster” if she was to lose the royal title because of her and her husband Prince Harry‘s recent attacks on the Royal Family.
Despite walking away from their patronages in January last year, the couple, who now live in the US with their son Archie, still use their high-profile titles.
Meghan, 39, has referred to herself as “The Duchess of Sussex” several times recently, including for her new children’s book The Bench, MirrorOnline reports.
A source close to the former Suits actress told Heat magazine that Meghan is worried about losing her title after Harry’s recent revelations about his family.
“She’s afraid they’ll take away their royal titles, which would be a PR disaster,” the source said.
“Right now, she’s inundated with offers, and that’s in part to being a Duchess.”
It comes after Harry spoke about his relatives in the bombshell Oprah Winfrey documentary The Me You Can’t See.
Harry made a number of comments about close family members as he spoke about how his time in ‘The Firm’ had impacted his mental health.
He told cameras: “My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I, ‘Well it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you.
“That doesn’t make sense.
“Just because you suffered doesn’t mean that your kids have to suffer, in fact, quite the opposite – if you suffered, do everything you can to make sure that whatever negative experiences you had, that you can make it right for your kids.”
Harry also claimed that his family told him to “play the game” when he admitted his struggles with royal life.
Weeks after Megxit was first announced in January 2020, Buckingham Palace issued a statement confirming that Harry and Meghan would step back from official royal duties and no longer use the titles His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness.
However, it stated they would continue to use the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Clearing up rumours about what the split would involve, the clarification read: “With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations.
“While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.
“The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”
