Brits spotted a dazzling fireball and a trail of smoke, with loud bangs heard for miles in what is reported to be a meteor.
People took to social media to share images and videos of the astonishing sightings.
The dramatic sighting was spotted across the UK shortly before 10pm, with Scots reporting the “stunning” moment.
Those in the West Country also saw the dramatic fireball.
Typically meteor’s travel across space at tens of thousands of miles per hour but burn up, producing a warm glow, if they enter the Earth’s atmosphere.
Londoner Shane Mann tweeted: “Just saw a #meteor burn up across the sky in West London. Stunning.
“I wasn’t quick enough with the camera sadly.â€
Channel 4 News producer Alice Wagstaffe said: “Just saw an incredible meteor or shooting star or something over London, please let there be video footage!â€
Another Twitter user added: “I swear I just saw a super bright meteor fall over north London.â€
A number of videos were posted on Twitter and Instagram purporting to show the meteor, reports The Express.
One, taken by a doorbell security system in Milton Keynes, shows a bright flame moving across the night sky.
There were also reports on social media of the meteor being seen from other parts of the UK including Manchester and Rochdale.
The UK Meteor Network, which monitors meteor sightings in Britain, tweeted: “Looks like a lot of people in the UK and Ireland saw the 9:55 #fireball #meteor.

On Sunday evening ‘meteor’ became one of the top trending topics on UK Twitter.
Maria Morrison tweeted: ” Im sorry… did anyone just see a Meteor or a fireball flying through the sky… ???
“That was the biggest thing I’ve ever seen!”
