A mum is alleged to have accidentally shot her 5-year-old son while trying to shoot a dog that was running across the street.
Angelia Mia Vargas, 24, was arrested last Saturday (May 29) after she fired a pistol three times at a loose dog, with one of the bullets ricocheting into her son’s stomach.
The child was transported to a hospital and is said to be in a stable condition with what are believed to be non life-threatening wounds.
The incident took place at around 2:15pm in Houston, Texas, when a 6-month-old boxer dog named Bruno escaped out his front door, ABC13 reports.
A video shows Bruno’s owner following the runaway puppy onto the street before three bullets were fired at the dog by Vargas, who was riding bikes down the street with her family.
According to Houston Police Department, she fired a small caliber pistol at the dog three times across a public roadway and in the direction of two occupied houses.
Screaming could then be heard as her son was struck in the abdomen.
Bruno’s owner told ABC13 there was no need to shoot and “she could have handled it differently”.
The owner, who didn’t want to be named, said she hadn’t even aimed when she began shooting the pistol.
Houston Police Department Detective, J. Hasley, said: “HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the above address. Upon arrival, they learned the boy had been struck in the abdomen by a ricocheting bullet.
“Investigators learned the child’s mother, suspect Vargas, had fired a small caliber pistol three times at a dog running loose across the street. One of the bullets ricocheted and struck the child.”
Vargas was arrested and charged with deadly conduct – discharge of firearm in the 185th State District Court.
