Mystery still surrounds the identity and circumstances surrounding the discovery of a human skull in a wooded area in Bolton.

Three months ago, just after midnight on March 1, a couple discovered the skull outside an abandoned hotel.

The self-described paranormal investigators immediately called the police where cordons were erected and specialist forensic officers got to work.

DNA assessments of the skull have so far revealed that it is likely to have belonged to male who is under the age of 50 years old.

Crucially his identity and how he died remain shrouded in mystery, reports the MEN.

On the night the couple found the skull they claimed that an army style jacket was found close to the remains, but Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say no further pieces of evidence were retrieved from the scene.

While detectives seem sure the remains do not relate to any ongoing investigations, it is yet to be established if it is linked to any missing persons.

A spokesperson for GMP told the MEN: “Forensics are yet to determine the age of the person or how they died.

“It is still not being linked to any other investigation and enquiries are ongoing as to whether it’s linked to a missing person but there is nothing to suggest this either way at the moment.

“Nothing was found close to the scene that has provided any further evidential lines of enquiry.

“No one has been charged in relation to this incident.”

When the skull was found close to the abandoned hotel in Egerton, Detective Inspector Debbie Hurst, of Greater Manchester Police’s Bolton CID, said it was a “very surprising discovery”.

“By the very nature of this discovery, we do understand some concern in the community and of course the sheer intrigue that this investigation brings with it, however we are confident that there is no threat to the public and that this isn’t currently linked to any other ongoing investigations,” she added.

“We are keen to establish the facts as soon as we can but the work that is ongoing must be conducted thoroughly and properly before we get to that stage.”
