UK weather: Washout to continue into next week as showers and storms batter country

Brits are sure to be grateful they can all meet up indoors again this week with more storms set to batter the country.

Heavy downpours and thundery showers will spread across large parts of the country during the coming week meaning any Brits hoping to enjoy see loved ones outdoors will struggle to stay dry.

The weather forecast for Sunday once again looks grim after heavy rain lashed down for many parts of the country on Saturday – as the weekend washout continues into the week.

It is set to be cloudy in the far north with some drizzle, according to the Met Office. Elsewhere, it’s sunshine and heavy showers in places with a risk of hail and thunder.

Showers are likely to continue through Sunday night, with the weekend washout is set to stick around, The Mirror reports.

Though there may be snippets of sunshine this week, the Met Office has warned torrential rainstorms could continue for the rest of the month with temperatures unlikely to reach the high teens.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna poured cold water on hopes that temperatures could climb back to 22C in time for the Bank Holiday weekend, saying the rainy weather will be here until June.

But he did offer some hope, telling the Mirror last week: “The longer-range forecast suggests that by early June there’s a hint of things becoming drier and more settled.

“Before that, temperatures could reach close to or above the average. Most likely it will be the mid to high teens – 17 or 18C.”

Meanwhile, BBC forecaster Matt Taylor said: “It’s even warmer in Finland than it is here in the UK where temperatures are well down on where they should be for this stage in the month.”

Even so, bookmaker Coral makes this summer odds-on at 1-2 to be the hottest on record in the UK as longer-term forecasts point to sizzling temperatures.

MET OFFICE OUTLOOK

Sunday:

Cloudy in the far north with some drizzle, else another day of sunshine and showers, these heavy in places with a risk of hail and thunder, particularly in central areas.

Sunday night:

Variable cloud and clear spells, with many areas becoming mainly dry. However, showers likely to continue across parts of Scotland, central and southeast England.

Monday:

Scattered heavy showers developing again during the day, particularly across central and eastern UK with hail and thunder likely. Drier conditions expected across the north and west by afternoon.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

Brighter spells and showers Tuesday, but cloudier in the north with rain. Many areas drier Wednesday. Wind and rain moving from the west on Thursday. Rather cool.
