Emma Coronel Aispuro, wife of the drug lord known as “El Chapo“, has been arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.
The 31-year-old has been charged with participating in a conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for importation into the US.
She is also alleged to have conspired with others to assist El Chapo in helping him escape from Altiplano prison in Mexico in 2015.
El Chapo, real name Joaquin Guzman, was once Mexico’s most powerful drug lord. His cartel, Sinaloa, was responsible for smuggling mass amount of drugs into the US during a period of 25 years.

The convicted felon escaped through tunnels that began under his prison cell shower, and he had a motorbike waiting for him when he surfaced.
El Chapo remained on the run for several months, but was arrested again in 2016 and was extradited to the US, where there were several warrants for his arrest. He was sentenced to life in prison in July 2019.

Emma Coronel Aispuro was born on July 3, 1989, in California, US, while her mother was visiting relatives there.
She was raised in a small village in Durango, Mexico.
The former journalism student first met Guzman at a beauty pageant when she was 17 – and he was 49.
Aispuro went on to win the pageant, and Guzman was reportedly blown away by her beauty.

She married Mexican drug lord El Chapo in 2007, on her 18th birthday.
The pair have twins together, Maria Joaquina and Emami, who were born in Lancaster, north of Los Angeles, in 2012.
She reportedly left the father’s name blank on the birth certificate to protect El Chapo’s identity.
